元星球大未来!宁波诺丁汉大学V-ROOM实验室盛装启幕

reate a more interactive and engaging teaching environment through cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology while also strengthening students' situational learning abilities and long-term memory formations, thereby improving the students' overall learning experience.

Dr K. Cohen Tan, Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, described the V-ROOM as a key to opening the door to digital learning. Technology should not determine pedagogy but extend it in a meaningful way. The integration of digital technology and higher education is part of a wider trend within the Future of Work (FoW), especially since the disruption brought about by COVID-19 to traditional face-to-face models of knowledge transfer and learning. As a benchmark project for the digital transformation of teaching and learning at UNNC, the V-ROOM lab underscores the university’s commitment to developing students' future skills and for enhancing the learning experience of students.

“When we built this lab, we were thinking, what will the future of learning look like? What kind of teaching is suitable for our students? This generation of students were born into the information age, and the use of digital media is like second nature to them. Therefore, we believe that providing interactive and immersive digital learning experiences for future learners can cultivate and stimulate a range of skills and abilities, so that they can acquire the core competencies to face a rapidly changing and uncertain FoW,” added Cohen.

According to Dr Sannia Mareta, the head of the laboratory, the V-ROOM lab allows students to collaborate and explore with each other in an immersive environment, break down the barriers of time and space, and to truly learn by experiencing.

She further mentioned that the V-ROOM lab has created more than ten VR/AR pilot learning programmes so far, including aircraft investigations, language learning, automated warehouse management and others. They found that in virtual reality scenarios, students are able to learn more actively, create a deeper understanding, and remember for longer periods of time. For example, during the learning module for aircraft structures, in a three-part virtual simulation scenario, students observe, analyze and judge the reasons for the aircraft’s abnormal functions by acting as investigators. They then test, correct and adjust the corresponding equipment through simulated operations, which allows them to truly grasp the concepts under study and consolidate deep long-term memories on the subject.

In addition, Sannia stated that the V-ROOM Lab is an innovation platform for both technology and education. They also hope to enhance the historical and cultural values of Ningbo using this VR and AR technology, such as through the construction of digital exhibitions and scenic spots, as well as to collaborate with other institutions in Ningbo or China to run joint-programmes or activities that promote these values.

The passing year of 2021 is considered as the first year of the metaverse. Industry insiders generally believe that technology and immersion are vital for the continuing development of the metaverse. It can be clearly demonstrated that the University of Nottingham Ningbo China is also embracing this trend in different ways by redefining the teaching scene and leading the way for the digital transformation of education.
